Not For Tourists is scouring the globe looking for non-fiction
writers to contribute to our website. At this point, we are only looking for contributors
for the cities that we publish guides to—Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles,
New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington DC. We have two sections
that we need non-fiction editorial pieces for—On Our Radar and Features.
Chances are that you’re writing about your city anyway. This is an opportunity for
you to get paid (a tiny amount) and also get some exposure. We'll post your bio with a photo
and links to your blogs, websites, or whatever else you want.
You can find examples of Radars and Features for each city on the NFT website .
Please do not send a submission without viewing some of the existing editorial.
And remember, we're only looking for writers with attitude—sassy, irreverent, know-it-all,
honest, smash-mouth, world-weary, reverential, sarcastic. Don't hold back. Be real.
Be NFT.
On Our Radar pieces are published on a daily basis. They are blurbs/expositions/conversations
(100-200 words) about old-school hardware stores, hidden bars, fancy restaurants
(we can't afford), funky museums, 24-hour bakeries, hanging out under the bridge
with your favorite take out…You get the idea. They are things that you have visited
or experienced recently—giving our readers a first-hand account of things around
the city and your 'hood. We also need photographs. The photos you send us can either
be ones that you have taken, or photos that you have received permission to use.
We really like creative photos of interior spaces, food or liquids, dancing patrons
or staff, and so on. But we're not too picky, and we'll even take photos from your
cell phone if you're too cheap to buy a digital camera. Compensation for 10 Radars
is $50, publication on our website, and a personal bio.
Features are published on a monthly basis. They are more discursive essay
pieces about interesting and relevant things in your city. It is important to remember
that they are not Radars on steroids, but more like articles you'd read in a (decent)
magazine. The word count for Features is 1,200 – 2,500 words, and we also need some
nice photographs to accompany the text. There are some Features that will be written
for all cities (eg. Guide to Entertaining Tourists, Your City on a Budget, Navigating
Government Departments, etc…), while others will be relevant only to your city.
Compensation is $75. We are always looking for unique, engaging, and brilliant Feature
proposals.
If you are interested in writing Radars, please submit items 1-4. If you are interested
in Features, please submit 1-5. Send the following items to craign@notfortourists.com.
- Cover Letter (no boring ones please)
- Resume
- Writing Sample
- Sample Radar
- Proposal of potential Feature idea, including title and brief (one paragraph) outline
NFT is a small start-up publishing company. We’re looking to develop and grow the
Not For Tourists brand and hope that you’ll enjoy being a part of that process. |
