The People

   Club Oasis
To truly be a man or woman of the people, one must walk as the people walk, talk as the people talk and dance one's ass off ass like the people dance their asses off. Do this and the love will flow like wine. That seems to be the underlying secret to the success of "The People," the Oakland house and broken beat banger that spreads soulful love across the dance floor on the last Saturday of every month. Chill is the operative word-the folks are cool, the smiles are wide and the vibe is generally more laid back than most spots across the bridge. And while the Bay is an electronic music mecca, a lot of the parties lean more towards the techy, knob twisting shores while The People swims in deeper waters. The rotating cast of DJs dig into the soul music crates and dish out some of the best in deep, tribal house, broken beat and nu jazz. And when the weather's warm the night stretches out into an afternoon long affair with barbecue, vendors and live acts kicking things off around 5ish. Come with a passion for sweaty communion and a hunger for late night rhythms and The People will greet you with open arms.

   Fireside Bar
Inner Sunset: good food, nice shopping, laid-back atmosphere… no good bars! Forgive me, but as much as I enjoy the lack of pretentiousness around here, I do like to periodically get a decent beverage in an actual establishment and this is where the Inner Sunset failed for a long time--until the arrival of Fireside. I mean, not to dis other options but for the lighting that one of the other bars provides, I might as well go to Andronico's. As for the others, the mix of a rowdy crowd and my urge to go home whenever bathroom time came around... let's just say that I actually drove to different neighborhoods even for that school night bevvie. That is, until Fireside came along. And what a cute joint it is: a jukebox, a fireplace (although one can't help but wonder why it is not operational in the "summer"), sweet bartenders, good cocktails at five bucks... heck, even a Saturday night could be spent here with no regrets whatsoever.

Art Star

   Joyce Gordon Gallery
In the last couple of years new art galleries have been popping up all around the downtown area, bringing some much needed flavor to the Oakland art scene. But at a ripe old age of 5, the Joyce Gordon Gallery is the reigning matriarch, holding shit down on 14th St. with one of the few African-American owned gallery spaces in the Bay. With high-end shows by international art stars like Raymond Saunders and an impressive roster of local and nationally known visual artists, the gallery already had a strong rep, but for the Big 5 Gordon has stepped up her game, hosting an international tribute to photographer James Van Der Zee in the new downstairs photo gallery while vying for Oaktown street cred with August's graffiti and "Street Calligraphy" show by TCB, one of the Bay's original bombing crews. Can't wait to see how she wrecks shop for her 10th.

A Fish in Full

   B & M Mei Sing Restaurant
Going out for Chinese fast food usually means either a steam plate of rice or noodles with a choice of entrees, or a plate of chow mein or chow fun. While all of these are respectable options, you could do better than that, for roughly the same price. B & M Mei Sing provides all of the above, with reasonable quality. But there is another option that doesn't fit the stereotype of a quick Chinese lunch. I'd always been intrigued by the deep-fried sole, served with rice and vegetables, but wasn't sure if it was on the menu. I realized that it was, and ordered it when I tired of the usual lunch staples. As anticipated, the portion was enough to feed two, so anyone wishing to sample it should bring along a buddy who won't freak out at the sight of a whole fish with bones and eyeballs.

   Borderlands
Shove that e-book up your wormhole. Since 1997, Borderlands has nourished those of us who need printed pages of horror, fantasy, and sci-fi to continue slogging through this benighted mistake we call life. Caress the razor-creased edges of a new zombie western. Slaver upon the plump stack of new and used DVDs. Twitch in futurejoy as you find that exact used edition of that steampunk classic. The Borderlanders love what they do and it shows in their website. You can find pix of their sublime store beast Ripley on your own.

No Collared Shirt Required: Golf for the Anti-Golfer
No one puts Dan Bollwinkel's golf game in a corner. A self-described anti-golfer, Dan has come to show you that golfing doesn't have to be high-class, tidy or bereft of beer swilling. So, come!
